Who are we?

At the Mandarin, we believe in offering the best quality of Chinese food, with unparalleled customer service to all our customers. As such the restaurant offers top quality and authentic Chinese food coupled with the highest standard rating in food hygiene of five stars.

Our menu consists of Cantonese dishes as well as other delicious foods originating from various regions in China including Szechuan and Beijing. It is best described as inclusive and wide-ranging offering many enticing options. For instance, our selection of appetizing dishes and banquet meals are available to cater for everyone’s taste. Our menu is endlessly inventive and if there's something that you would like that is not on the menu, please ask - we will be happy to accommodate your palate where possible. Additionally, if you have specific dietary requirements please do not hesitate to ask a member of staff for assistance in choosing your meal.

Payment on card

Dear Customers,
Please note, with immediate effect we will no longer accept card payments for orders under £12.50.
This is due to the high charges that we have to pay to the card companies to process payments.

The Management's decision is final
Thank you for your understanding.

Please note when placing your order either in person or on the phone, a member of staff will always repeat your order with you to ensure it is correct. Also, when collecting your order, a member of staff will always read out what you have ordered – should a member of staff not do so, please remind them. Please listen carefully on both occasions that it is correct and contains the dishes that you have ordered.

For Delivery Orders, please note that only the member of staff who takes your phone order can repeat your order to you at that time. The Delivery Driver cannot check your order due to time constraints.

Once you have received the food from our staff, we will no longer be responsible for any item missing that you have not ordered and paid for. Items you have paid for should all be in the order bag. However, should anything be missing which you have paid for, please let us know immediately so that we can replace it for you. Please do not wait until the next day.

New Take-away Menu

Due to the increase of stocks and utilities prices and the increase of the national minimum wage, we have to increase the prices of our takeaway menu. We thank our customers for understanding the reasons for the takeaway price increase.

A message from the management

As a local business, The Mandarin takes food quality seriously and cares tremendously about the health and well-being of the local community. Unlike other similar businesses which may reuse dirty used frying oil to cook dishes, we dispose all of our used frying oil via a qualified used-oil collecting company. The Mandarin was recently visited by the Environmental Health Inspector from South Derbyshire District Council and we are proud to inform you that we have been awarded once again a 5 star food hygiene rating - 6 years in a row.

James wishes to announce that he is currently working with neighbour landowners in relation to the land at the back of the lawn of The Mandarin's land and the land adjacent which is owned by our neighbour landowners.

It is correct that a planning application has been submitted to South Derbyshire District Council to acquire permission for housing development. Please be assured James has no intention of converting the restaurant car-park and part of the lawn into housing development. In other words the restaurant, bar and takeaway business will be retained beyond the housing development as local facilities in Hilton village.

James would like to take this opportunity to express his gratitude for the support and custom from members of the local community in Hilton and surrounding villages. This is extremely important for James as he very much sees The Mandarin (formally known as The White Swan) as an integral part of the Hilton village community. Over the years we have hosted Christening parties, wedding meal parties and local community clubs gatherings. Also, he has been supporting local community initiatives through various avenues including raffle donations to local schools and community associations. Additionally The Mandarin has been hosting the clothing and shoe recycling bank in the car-park until recently. Money generated from the recycle bank went to the social enterprise concerned and subsequently distributed to the local junior football clubs.

Finally, please take no notice of unfounded rumours that have been circulating in the village regarding the possible disappearance of The Mandarin premises. Whoever instigated such rumours deliberately misled local residents regarding the development proposal at the back of The Mandarin's land in order to acquire local support to save The Mandarin premises. It is questionable what the intention and hidden agenda that the rumour instigator may have- do they really have the best interest of the village at heart or do they have some personal agenda? James has no doubt regarding The Mandarin's restaurant and takeaway business will stay and serve Hilton and the surrounding villages for a long, long time. Further, what James is proposing to do is to merely connect the St Modwen's development ( for 500+ dwellings) with the piece of derelict farmland, at the back and adjacent to The Mandarin's land, which currently looks rather tired and messy into a more pleasant living environment. Moreover this proposal will help to address the housing shortage problem we face in South Derbyshire.
